Giving Back
I first discovered the joy of giving back in the summer of my junior year in college. I volunteered
to assist in what was then called a “sheltered workshop for retarded adults.” I became
particularly close to a young man and a young woman with severe physical and mental
disabilities. I remained close to both of them long after the summer ended. I helped teach both
how to write and mail letters and remain warmly in touch with the surviving woman, who was
probably the first angel I met on earth.
When my son turned 5, my 12 year coaching career began: t-ball, baseball, soccer and tennis for many recreational teams plus a couple of years as Cub Scout Den Leader.
When my son went off to college, I became a Big Brother. I am currently a mentor and friend to
my third Little Brother. I was honored to be named Big Brother of the Year in 2008 by Big
Brothers and Big Sisters of Palm Beach County.
I find that I am best able to serve the community by giving my time and heart to young individuals in need of someone who believes in them. Helping someone find the right path is the highest road I can travel.
